Stamped concrete steps at a house

Westminster Stamped Concrete builds stamped concrete steps for homes across Westminster. We measure the rise from the ground to your door, plan each step to the same size, and write you a quote before any digging starts.

How we build stamped steps

On the steps we build, we dig out the soil, lay a stone base and pack it down hard, then build wooden forms in the shape of each step and pour the concrete. While the concrete is still wet, we press rubber mats with the pattern on them into the tops and the fronts of the steps. We finish the front edge of each step by hand, so the pattern wraps around it.

When the concrete has hardened, we clean it and roll on the sealer. We can mix a grit into that sealer, so shoes get more grip when the steps are wet or icy.

How tall and how deep each step should be

On the steps we pour, the riser is the upright front face of each step, and the tread is the flat top you put your foot on. The nosing is the front edge of the tread.

Boulder County's guide to the 2021 International Residential Code says the maximum riser height is 7-3/4 inches, and the riser height may not vary more than 3/8 inch in a flight of stairs. It says the minimum tread depth is 10 inches, measured from the nosing of one tread to the next, and the tread depth may not vary more than 3/8 inch.

The same guide says there must be a floor or landing at the top and bottom of each stairway, and every landing must be at least 36 inches deep in the direction you walk. We check Westminster's own rules with the city's Building Division before we draw your steps.

Handrails, guards and lights

Boulder County's guide says a stairway with 4 or more risers needs a handrail on at least one side, set between 34 and 38 inches high. It says open sides of stairs that rise more than 30 inches above the ground need guards at least 34 inches high. We plan any guard, which is a rail along the open side of the steps, with you before the pour.

The guide also says outdoor stairs need a light at the top landing. We mark the handrail posts and the light before we pour, so we can leave room for them in the concrete.

Steps, snow and falls

The CDC says more than one out of four older people falls each year, and it lists broken or uneven steps among the hazards in a home that make a fall more likely. We pick a pattern with a light texture for steps, so snow brushes off and a boot does not catch on deep grooves.

Permits for steps in Westminster

The City of Westminster's Building Division says exterior permits need a site plan of the property. That plan shows the new structure and how far it sits from the property lines and the buildings already there.

Before we start, we call the Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your steps, and we tell you who will apply for any permit the job needs.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • How many steps there will be, and the height and depth of each one.
  • The size of the landing at the top and the bottom.
  • Where the handrail goes, and who supplies and fits it.
  • The pattern name, the base color and the release color.
  • How thick the concrete will be and what goes under it.
  • Whether grit goes into the sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
  • Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.

Questions about stamped concrete steps in Westminster

Can you tear out my old steps first?

Yes, we can break out the old concrete steps and haul them away before we pour. OSHA says cutting, sawing and grinding concrete makes very fine silica dust, so we wet the saw blade and keep the dust down near your door.

Can the steps match my walkway or patio?

Yes, we can use the same pattern and color as your stamped concrete walkways or stamped concrete patios, so the steps look like part of the same job.

How much do stamped concrete steps cost?

We price each set of steps once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with how many steps you need, how wide they are, the pattern and the colors you pick, and whether old steps have to come out first.

Can I pull the permit myself?

The City of Westminster says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits. It also says that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.

Is it safe to be around the steps on pour day?

OSHA says wet portland cement, an ingredient in concrete, can burn the skin, and it calls these cement burns. On pour day, we ask you to use another door and to keep kids and pets off the fresh steps until we've finished stamping.

My concrete steps are cracked. Can they be fixed?

We look at them first. If the steps are solid and only the top looks worn, we can do stamped concrete repair or a stamped concrete overlay. If they have sunk or pulled away from the house, we suggest tearing them out and pouring new ones.

Do you build steps outside Westminster?

Yes, we do. We also build steps in Arvada, Broomfield, Thornton and Northglenn.
