Westminster Stamped Concrete pours decorative concrete borders for homes across Westminster. The border we pour is a band of concrete around the edge of a patio, driveway, walk or pool deck, in a different color, pattern or finish from the middle. We bring samples, help you choose a style, and write you a quote before any work starts.

Border styles we pour

The borders we stamp can look like a row of brick, cobblestone, cut stone or slate. We can also leave the border smooth and color it, so it frames a stamped middle, or stamp the border and leave the middle plain.

We can run a border along one side of a walk, around all four sides of a patio, or along the curve of a garden path. On a large slab, we can pour a band across the middle to break it up into smaller areas.

Picking colors

We match the border color to your house as well as to the slab. We can pour a darker border around a lighter middle, or the other way round. We mix the color into the concrete before the pour, as we do on colored concrete, so a chip on the border shows the same color underneath.

We can also stain a border after it hardens. Or we can put a smooth band around an exposed aggregate slab, where we wash away the thin top layer of cement so the small stones in the concrete show. We bring samples to your house, so you can see them in daylight next to your siding and trim.

How we pour a border

On a new slab, we set a form board on the inside edge of the border, so we can pour and finish the border and the middle one at a time, and we give each part its own color and its own stamp. Between the two, we cut a straight line that also works as a control joint, so if the slab cracks, it cracks along that line and not across the pattern.

Once it has hardened, we clean the slab and seal all of it, border and middle together.

Adding a border to concrete you already have

There are two ways we can add a border to an old slab. We can pour a new band along the outside edge, if there is room in the yard. Or we can saw out the outer strip of the old slab and pour a new border in its place.

OSHA says cutting, sawing and grinding concrete makes very fine silica dust. It says breathing in those tiny particles raises the risk of serious diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease. When we saw old concrete, we wet the blade to keep the dust down.

Safety on pour day

OSHA says wet portland cement, an ingredient in concrete, can burn the skin. It calls these cement burns and says they may not hurt right away. We ask you to keep kids and pets off the area until we've finished.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • How wide the border will be, and which edges it runs along.
  • The pattern and color of the border, and of the middle.
  • Where the joints go, with a sketch.
  • Whether the border is part of a new pour, an add-on, or cut into an old slab.
  • The type of sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
  • Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.

Questions about decorative concrete borders in Westminster

How much does a decorative concrete border cost?

We price each border once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with the length of the border, how many colors you pick and whether old concrete has to be cut out first.

Can a border go on a driveway?

Yes, we can pour a border on a driveway, as we do on our stamped concrete driveways. The City of Westminster says all work on public rights-of-way, including sidewalks and curbs, needs a permit issued to a licensed contractor, so we keep the border on your side of the public sidewalk unless that permit is in place.

Can you add a border around my pool?

Yes, we can pour a border around the edge of a pool deck, and we keep the same slope away from the pool that we use on our stamped concrete pool decks.

Will the border match my patio?

Yes, we can stamp a border with the same pattern family as your stamped concrete patio, in a second color, so the two look like one job.

Do I need a permit for a concrete border?

Before we start, we call the City of Westminster's Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your job, and we tell you who will apply for any permit it needs. The city says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits, and that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.

Does a border make snow clearing harder?

We stamp the border with a light texture, so a shovel slides over it. The City of Westminster says residents have to clear all snow and ice from the sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a storm.

Do you pour borders outside Westminster?

Yes, we do. We also pour decorative concrete borders in Arvada, Broomfield, Thornton and Northglenn.
