Westminster Stamped Concrete builds stamped concrete patios for homes across Westminster. We measure the space, check where the rain will run, and write you a quote before any digging starts.

How we build a stamped patio

On the patios we build, we dig out the soil, lay a stone base and pack it down hard, then set the forms and pour the concrete. While the concrete is still wet, we press rubber mats with the pattern on them into the surface. Then we cut the control joints. These are straight lines we cut into the slab, so that if it cracks, it cracks along them and not across the pattern.

When the slab has hardened, we clean it and roll on the sealer.

Patterns and colors

The patios we stamp can look like flagstone (flat, uneven pieces of stone fitted together), slate, cobblestone, brick or wood planks. We add color in two ways. We mix a base color into the concrete before the pour, and we dust a release color on top before stamping, which leaves a darker shade in the low spots of the pattern.

We bring samples to your house, so you can see the colors in daylight next to your siding and roof. We can also frame the patio with decorative concrete borders in a second color.

Where the water goes

The patios we pour don't let rain soak through, so we slope each one away from your house. The EPA says stormwater runoff comes from rain and melting snow that flow over land or hard surfaces, such as paved streets, parking lots and roofs, and do not soak into the ground. It says that runoff can pick up trash, chemicals and dirt and carry them into streams and lakes. Where the yard allows it, we send that water toward a lawn or garden bed, not the street.

Permits for a patio in Westminster

The City of Westminster's Building Division says exterior permits need a site plan of the property. That plan shows the new structure and how far it sits from the property lines and the buildings already there.

If you want a roof over the patio, the city lists that as a patio cover, a structure attached to the home and open on at least two sides. Patio covers are their own permit type on the city's list.

Before we start, we call the Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your patio, and we tell you who will apply for any permit it needs.

Safety around wet concrete

OSHA says wet portland cement, an ingredient in concrete, can burn the skin. It calls these cement burns and says they may not hurt right away. On pour day, we ask you to keep kids and pets away from the patio until we've finished stamping. If wet concrete gets on someone's skin, OSHA says to wash it off with clean, cool water.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The size of the patio, and a sketch that shows where the control joints go.
  • The pattern name, the base color and the release color.
  • How thick the concrete will be and what goes under it.
  • Which way the patio will slope, and where the water will go.
  • The type of sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
  • Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.

Questions about stamped concrete patios in Westminster

Can you match my patio to a walkway or steps?

Yes, we can use the same pattern and color on stamped concrete walkways and stamped concrete steps, so the whole backyard looks like one job.

Can I pull the permit myself?

The City of Westminster says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits. It also says that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.

How much does a stamped concrete patio cost?

We price each patio once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with the size, the pattern, how many colors you pick and how much digging your yard needs.

How soon can we use the new patio?

We'll tell you on the day how long to stay off the new concrete, because the weather changes how fast it hardens.

Will the color fade?

We seal every patio we stamp, and we can come back for concrete sealing when the color starts to look dull.

My old patio is cracked. Do I need a new one?

We look at it first. If the slab is solid, we can put a stamped concrete overlay on top, which gives it a new pattern without a new pour. If it has sunk or broken up, we suggest tearing it out and pouring a new patio.

Do you build patios outside Westminster?

Yes, we do. We also build patios in Arvada, Broomfield, Thornton and Northglenn.
