Westminster Stamped Concrete pours colored concrete for homes across Westminster. We can pour color on its own, on a smooth or broom-finished slab, or stamp a pattern on top of it. We bring samples, help you pick a shade, and write you a quote before any work starts.
How we add color to concrete
We add color in three ways, and we can use more than one on the same slab.
- Integral color. We mix the color into the concrete before the pour, so the whole slab we pour is that color all the way through, and a chip on top shows the same color underneath.
- Color hardener. We spread a colored powder over the wet concrete and work it into the top. On the slabs we pour, this gives a brighter shade and a harder top layer than integral color alone.
- Release color. On stamped work, we dust a second color on top before stamping, which leaves a darker shade in the low spots of the pattern.
If your slab is already poured, we can add color to it with concrete staining instead.
Picking a color
We bring samples to your house, so you can hold them up in daylight next to your siding, roof and trim. We show you a larger sample board when we can, because a small chip can look different from a whole patio.
The colors we pour come out a little different from one batch to the next, so we pour a job from the same color mix and order enough for the whole area in one go. If you want to add on later, we tell you before we start that a new pour may not match the old one exactly.
Keeping the color bright
We seal every colored slab we pour. The sealer we roll on deepens the color and helps keep stains and water out. When the color starts to look dull, we can come back for concrete sealing.
The City of Westminster says residents have to clear all snow and ice from the sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a storm. On colored walks and driveways, we tell you which ice-melting products to use, and we suggest a plastic shovel blade, so the sealer doesn't get scraped off.
Safety on pour day
OSHA says wet portland cement, an ingredient in concrete, can burn the skin. It calls these cement burns and says they may not hurt right away. We ask you to keep kids and pets off the area until we've finished. If wet concrete gets on someone's skin, OSHA says to wash it off with clean, cool water.
When we saw the control joints, the straight lines we cut so a slab cracks along them, we keep the dust down with water. OSHA says cutting, sawing and grinding concrete makes very fine silica dust. It says breathing in those tiny particles raises the risk of serious diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- How the color will go in: mixed in, spread on top, or both.
- The color name and the maker's color code.
- The release color, if the slab will be stamped.
- The type of sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
- Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.
Questions about colored concrete in Westminster
How much does colored concrete cost?
We price each job once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with the size, the way the color goes in, how many colors you pick and whether we stamp a pattern.
Can you add a pattern too?
Yes, we can stamp a pattern into colored concrete. See our stamped concrete patios, stamped concrete driveways and stamped concrete walkways.
Can you color around my pool?
Yes, we can pour colored stamped concrete pool decks. We'll help you pick a shade that goes with the water and the rest of the yard.
Can you change the color of my old concrete?
We look at it first. If the slab is solid, we can stain it, or lay a stamped concrete overlay in a new color on top.
Do I need a permit for colored concrete?
Before we start, we call the City of Westminster's Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your job, and we tell you who will apply for any permit it needs. The city says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits, and that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.
Do you pour colored concrete outside Westminster?
Yes, we do. We also pour colored concrete in Arvada, Broomfield, Thornton and Northglenn.
