Westminster Stamped Concrete builds stamped concrete pool decks for homes across Westminster. We measure around the pool, check where the splash water and rain will run, and write you a quote before any digging starts.

How we build a stamped pool deck

On the pool decks we build, we dig out the soil, lay a stone base and pack it down hard, then set the forms and pour the concrete up to the edge of the pool. While the concrete is still wet, we press rubber mats with the pattern on them into the surface. Then we cut the control joints. These are straight lines we cut into the slab, so that if it cracks, it cracks along them and not across the pattern.

When the slab has hardened, we clean it and roll on the sealer. On a pool deck, we mix a grit into that sealer, so wet feet get more grip.

Patterns that suit wet, bare feet

The pool decks we stamp can look like flagstone (flat, uneven pieces of stone fitted together), slate, cobblestone or wood planks. We steer you toward a pattern with a light texture, so it grips under wet feet but still feels good to walk on barefoot.

We add color in two ways. We mix a base color into the concrete before the pour, and we dust a release color on top before stamping, which leaves a darker shade in the low spots of the pattern. On a pool deck, we suggest a lighter base color, because a dark deck gets hotter in the sun. We bring samples to your house, so you can see them in daylight next to the pool and your siding.

Where the splash water goes

The pool decks we pour don't let water soak through, so we slope each one away from the pool and away from your house, to keep splash water and rain out of the pool and away from your back door. Where the yard allows it, we send that water toward a lawn or garden bed.

Pool permits and fences in Westminster

The City of Westminster says in-ground pools, and above-ground pools more than two feet deep, need permits. Its Building Division also says exterior permits need a site plan of the property, showing the new structure and how far it sits from the property lines and the buildings already there.

The Pool Safely campaign says a fence at least four feet tall should go around the pool on all sides, and that children should not be able to climb it. It says the only way to the water should be through a gate that closes and latches on its own, and it suggests an alarm on the door from the house to the pool area. We plan the deck edges around where your fence and gate posts will sit.

Before we start, we call the Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your deck, and we tell you who will apply for any permit it needs.

Safety on pour day

OSHA says wet portland cement, an ingredient in concrete, can burn the skin. It calls these cement burns and says they may not hurt right away. On pour day, we ask you to keep kids, pets and swimmers out of the backyard until we've finished stamping.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The size of the deck, and a sketch that shows where the control joints go.
  • The pattern name, the base color and the release color.
  • How thick the concrete will be and what goes under it.
  • Which way the deck will slope, and where the water will go.
  • Whether grit goes into the sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
  • How the deck meets the pool edge, and who protects the pool during the pour.
  • Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.

Questions about stamped concrete pool decks in Westminster

Can you add steps down to the pool?

Yes, we can pour stamped concrete steps from the back door or patio down to the deck, in the same pattern and color.

Will the color fade in the sun?

We seal every pool deck we stamp, and we can come back for concrete sealing with fresh grit when the color looks dull or the old coat wears thin.

Can you replace an old pool deck without touching the pool?

Yes, we can break out the old deck in sections and cover the pool while we work. We tell you before we start if anything around the pool edge needs fixing first.

Will concrete dust get in the pool?

OSHA says cutting, sawing and grinding concrete makes very fine silica dust. We cover the pool on cutting days and rinse the deck down before we take the cover off.

How much does a stamped concrete pool deck cost?

We price each pool deck once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with the size, the pattern, how many colors you pick and whether an old deck has to come out first.

Can I pull the permit myself?

The City of Westminster says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits. It also says that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.

Can you match the pool deck to my patio?

Yes, we can use the same pattern and color on stamped concrete patios and stamped concrete walkways, so your whole backyard looks like one job.

My pool deck is cracked. Do I need a new one?

We look at it first. If the slab is solid, we can put a stamped concrete overlay on top, which gives it a new pattern without a new pour. If it has sunk or broken up, we suggest tearing it out and pouring a new deck.
