Westminster Stamped Concrete pours exposed aggregate concrete for homes across Westminster. The aggregate in the concrete we pour is the gravel and small stones mixed into it. On an exposed aggregate slab, we wash away the thin top layer of cement, so those stones show at the surface. We bring stone samples, help you pick a mix, and write you a quote before any work starts.

How we bring the stones up

We pour the slab, level it, and then spray the top with a product that slows down how fast the very top layer hardens, while we let the rest of the slab set underneath.

Once the slab is firm enough to walk on, we wash and brush the top layer off, so the tops of the stones show through. We stop when the stones look like the sample you picked, and we don't wash so deep that they come loose.

The surface we leave feels rough and bumpy, so it gives you more grip underfoot than a smooth slab when it's wet.

Picking the stones

We bring samples to your house, so you can see the stone colors and sizes in daylight next to your siding and trim. Some of the mixes we use are mostly one color, like tan river rock, and others mix gray, red and brown stones together.

We can also add color to the concrete around the stones, the same way we pour colored concrete, or frame an exposed aggregate slab with a smooth or stamped border.

Rinse water and the storm drain

The water we wash off the top of the slab carries the loose cement with it. The EPA says rain that runs off hard surfaces goes straight into a storm drain, with no soil, plants or water treatment plant to filter it first. So we catch the wash water and take the cement away with us, instead of hosing it into the street.

Safety on pour day

OSHA says wet portland cement, an ingredient in concrete, can burn the skin. It calls these cement burns and says they may not hurt right away. We ask you to keep kids and pets off the area until we've finished. If wet concrete gets on someone's skin, OSHA says to wash it off with clean, cool water.

When we saw the control joints, the straight lines we cut so a slab cracks along them, we keep the dust down with water. OSHA says cutting, sawing and grinding concrete makes very fine silica dust. It says breathing in those tiny particles raises the risk of serious diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease.

Sealing and winter care

We seal every exposed aggregate slab we pour. The sealer we roll on brings out the color of the stones and helps keep water and stains out.

The City of Westminster says residents have to clear all snow and ice from the sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a storm. On an exposed aggregate walk or driveway, we suggest a plastic shovel blade, so you don't catch the stones or scrape off the sealer, and we tell you which ice-melting products to use.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The stone mix, with its name or a sample you keep.
  • Any color added to the concrete around the stones.
  • Where the wash water will go.
  • The type of sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
  • Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.

Questions about exposed aggregate concrete in Westminster

How much does exposed aggregate concrete cost?

We price each job once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with the size of the area, the stone mix you pick, any added color and whether we add a border.

Is exposed aggregate the same as stamped concrete?

We treat them as two different finishes. On stamped concrete patios, we press a pattern into the top, and on exposed aggregate we wash the top away to show real stones.

Can you pour an exposed aggregate driveway?

Yes, we can pour exposed aggregate driveways. If the job reaches the sidewalk or the curb, we check the city rules for that part first, as we do on our stamped concrete driveways.

Is exposed aggregate good around a pool?

Yes, we can pour exposed aggregate around a pool. We pick a smaller, smoother stone for bare feet, and we slope it away from the pool, as we do on stamped concrete pool decks.

Can you turn my old concrete into exposed aggregate?

We can't bring stones up on a slab that has already hardened. We can lay a stamped concrete overlay on top, or tear out the old slab and pour new.

Do I need a permit for exposed aggregate concrete?

Before we start, we call the City of Westminster's Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your job, and we tell you who will apply for any permit it needs. The city says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits, and that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.

Do you pour exposed aggregate outside Westminster?

Yes, we do. We also pour exposed aggregate concrete in Arvada, Broomfield, Thornton and Northglenn.
