Westminster Stamped Concrete stains concrete for homes across Westminster. We add the color to a slab that is already poured, so you can change the look of plain gray concrete without tearing it out. We look at your concrete, bring color samples and write you a quote before any work starts.
Acid stain or water-based stain
We use two kinds of stain, and we help you pick the one that suits your slab.
- Acid stain. The acid stains we use react with the concrete itself, so the color soaks in and comes out uneven and marbled, a bit like natural stone, in earthy shades such as tan, brown and soft green.
- Water-based stain. The water-based stains we use sit in the top of the concrete and give a more even color, and we can get them in brighter shades and black.
Sometimes we use both on one slab: acid stain for the base, then a water-based stain to pick out a border.
Getting the slab ready
On the slabs we stain, the color only takes where the surface is clean and open. We wash off dirt, oil and old sealer first. If there is old paint or a thick sealer, we grind the top so the stain can soak in.
OSHA says cutting, sawing and grinding concrete makes very fine silica dust. It says breathing in those tiny particles raises the risk of serious diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease. When we grind, we keep the dust down with water or a vacuum on the grinder.
We tell you before we start if patches, old repairs or oil marks on your slab are likely to show through the new color.
Rinse water and the storm drain
After an acid stain, we wash the slab to take off the leftover acid. The EPA says rain that runs off hard surfaces goes straight into a storm drain, with no soil, plants or water treatment plant to filter it first. That's why we catch the rinse water and take it away with us, instead of hosing it into the street.
Sealing and winter care
We seal every slab we stain. The sealer we roll on deepens the color and helps keep water and stains out.
The City of Westminster says residents have to clear all snow and ice from the sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a storm. On a stained walk or driveway, we tell you which ice-melting products to use, and we suggest a plastic shovel blade, so the sealer doesn't get scraped off.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The type of stain, and the color names.
- How the slab will be cleaned or ground before staining.
- Where the rinse water will go.
- The type of sealer, and whether the first coat is in the price.
- Who will apply for a permit, if the job needs one.
Questions about concrete staining in Westminster
How much does concrete staining cost?
We price each job once we've seen the concrete, and you get that quote in writing. Our price moves with the size of the area, how much cleaning and grinding it needs and how many colors you pick.
Can you stain my old patio?
Yes, we can stain an old patio if the concrete is solid. If it has sunk or broken up, we suggest new stamped concrete patios or a stamped concrete overlay instead.
Will stain cover cracks?
We can't hide a crack with stain, because the stain we use soaks in and the crack still shows. We can fill small cracks first, or look at stamped concrete repair.
Is stain the same as colored concrete?
We treat them as two different jobs. With colored concrete, we mix the color in before the pour, and we use stain on concrete that is already in the ground.
Can you stain stamped concrete?
Yes, we can stain stamped concrete to bring back faded color or add a second shade to the pattern.
Do I need a permit for concrete staining?
Before we start, we call the City of Westminster's Building Division at 303-658-2075 about your job, and we tell you who will apply for any permit it needs. The city says homeowners who live in the home can do the work and apply for the permits, and that if you hire a contractor, the contractor must be signed on to the permit.
Do you stain concrete outside Westminster?
Yes, we do. We also stain concrete in Arvada, Broomfield, Thornton and Northglenn.
